Description
The African Hooded Vulture is currently listed as Critically endangered. It is a small scruffy vulture, mostly brown, with a long thin bill, bare crown face and foreneck. It feeds off the carcasses of dead animals and has a very important function. It can not only feed off dead carcasses but it can devour disease ridden animals that are riddle with anthrax and rabies without these deadly diseases affecting it so helps to keep these diseases down on the poorer remote regions of Africa. It is said that the acid in their stomachs can melt metal. So while not the best looking of birds, it makes an invaluable cotribution to the control of disease.
